SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity, is calling for volunteers to sign up to help man its stalls and help fundraise at the county’s major events this summer.

SSAFA has stalls at the Shrewsbury Food Festival (25/26 June),  the Shrewsbury Flower Show (13 August) and will be fundraising at Sainsbury’s in Meole Brace (3 September) and is looking for Shropshire’s great and good to join it in supporting the county’s Armed Forces community.

SSAFA provides lifelong support to anyone who is currently serving or has ever served in the Royal Navy, British Army or Royal Air Force, including reservists, and their families. The charity has recently seen an increase in need for support from the Shropshire Armed Forces community and is searching for new recruits to join its ranks of dedicated volunteers. If you are interested in joining the SSAFA team to volunteer at these events, to give something back to the Armed Forces in Shropshire, email shropshire@ssafa.co.uk or contact the team on 01743 344220.

The Shrewsbury Food Festival coincides with Armed Forces Day (25 June) and is a chance for people to show their support for the men and women of the Armed Forces community. SSAFA’s stalls at both events are in The Square and the charity encourages event goers to visit the stand and learn more about its vital work.

SSAFA’s new Shropshire branch chairman – retired Brigadier Andrew Meek – said: “The charity is delighted to be part of the Shrewsbury Food Festival and the other events, but we need volunteers to help with our stall as well as hold collection tins around the town.

“The fact the Shrewsbury Food Festival is also taking place around Armed Forces Day means we can encourage the public to support our veterans and serving personnel.

“All the funds raised at our stand or by the collections will remain in Shropshire to help veterans and serving personnel in the county, so please call or email us to volunteer at these events or come and see us on the day at our stall.”

SSAFA is the oldest, national, tri-service military charity in the UK, supporting some 55,000 people in the Armed Forces community each year. In Shropshire, SSAFA has volunteers throughout the county and in Telford and Wrekin.
