A Shropshire mum is giving up her time this Easter holidays to help children across the county prepare for their SATs tests..

Adele Conlon, mum to eight-year-old Finn and owner of family-run tutoring business Shropshire Tutor, will hold two Easter SATs Busting sessions over the school holidays.

Miss Conlon, who set up her tutoring business three years ago and has recently expanded by taking on additional tutors, said she had decided to hold the holiday sessions following repeated requests from parents.

She said: “SATs tests for Year 6 primary pupils are just around the corner so now is a crucial time for children to start preparing.

“I already run regular SATS preparation courses on Saturdays in Telford and Shrewsbury but parents have been asking for some extra sessions during the school holidays so I have decided to put on two more.”

The first session will be held on Wednesday, March 30, from 9am until 11am and the second from 12noon to 2pm on the same day, both at the Hadley Learning Community in Telford.

The sessions are aimed at building children’s confidence and understanding in what they will be tested on in maths, spelling, punctuation and grammar (SPAG).

This year’s tests will be the first to reflect the new National Curriculum, which underwent major changes in 2014.

Miss Conlon said: “Demand for our SATs preparation classes has really escalated over the last few months.

“I think it is directly linked to the fact that parents are now much more aware that the tests will follow a different format this year and children will be expected to know so much more.

“Sometimes parents feel out of touch with how and what their child is being taught and many are frightened of confusing their child by teaching them in a different way to how they learn at school.

“That’s why they find the classes helpful. Our tutors are all qualified, experienced teachers so can focus on the individual needs of children to boost their confidence.

“We provide a fun and engaging learning environment and use props and practical real-life situations to aid understanding and this seems to work incredibly well.”
