An amazing new festival is taking place in Shropshire later this month where visitors can get steamed up for a whole weekend.

The inaugural Shrewsbury Steampunk Spectacular takes place on the weekend of March 24-25 with a promise of fun and excitement for all the family – capturing the imagination of all ages.

Visitors will be stepping back in time to view Shrewsbury as it was 120 years ago or so. The event will be pulling in Steampunk fanatics and the Steampunk curious wanting to experience all the fun and excitement.

A Steampunk market at St Mary’s Church between 10am and 4pm on both days will be the focus of the event but there will be lots of other exciting attractions available throughout the town.

Belly Fusion Dance Collective will be entertaining throughout the festival, historic walking tours taking in the many Victorian aspects of the town will be held and there will be the opportunity to visit Coleham Pumping Station in all its Steam filled splendour.

There will be teapot racing, the chance to take part in an obstacle course event and a costume parade through the streets showing off Victorian and Edwardian dress at its finest. Workshops are planned at St Mary’s Church where visitors can try out and make musical instruments from scrap metal.

Charles Darwin will be making a return to see visitors arrive to look over his former school and Steampunk dressed librarians will offer activities and tours at Shrewsbury Library.

Dancers, magicians and musicians will be providing Steampunk entertainment across the weekend and on the Saturday evening The Buttermarket Cellars hosts the best in Steampunk music and entertainment.

Headlining will be Captain of The Lost Waves. Also on the impressive bill is the magical Miss Sylvia Sceptre, Lady Violet Hugh, LM Cooke Music and David Brinkworth and the Pit. Local entertainers Art Squad Anarchy will be compering the evening.

It really promises to be a great weekend with something of interest to suit people of all ages.
