Next week I’m going to see the ballet. The Vienna Festival Ballet at The Place, Oakengates Theatre.
It’s a production of Coppélia and the visit came about after a friend and I were discussing how often we see shows, musicals, ballet and other productions. It turns out, not very often.
So I spotted this and I’m pretty excited now.
The last ballet performance I went to was The Nutcracker, a long time ago when I was being ‘cultured’ by some well intentioned family friends. Turns out, I loved the culture! The gracefullness of dance, poise and intricacy of the movements, it was mesmerising. But I actually haven’t seen a ballet production since. Why?
I think I thought I would have to go to London or to Birmingham to see a good one. So when The Place brochure dropped through my letter box in Telford I was pleasantly surprised.
Coppélia is said to appeal to everyone who appreciates brilliant dance, a “lively production, infused with old world charm”. Count me in.
It’s about an eccentric toymaker and his beloved doll and advertisements promise colourful costumes, lively characters and beautiful music creating “a magical and comical classic”. That’s another thing that caught my eye – ballet… comical? It’s started to dismiss all my pre-conceptions of ballet now.According to the Oakengates Theatre website reviewers love it:
“An excellent company of talented young dancers. Their energy and enthusiasm is breathtaking.” ENTS24.COM
“The entire show was captivating from start to finish.” Welwyn Hatfield Times
“A truly spellbinding performance!” Burnley Express
“Talented array of young artistes.” Oxford Times
Four Stars – WhatsOnStage
