Improving the energy efficiency of a home could see its value increase, says a Shropshire businessman.
The latest research shows a huge growth in the number of would-be buyers or renters who want to know how eco-friendly a house is before they sign on the dotted line.
And Claus Best, who runs Smart Energy Services in Bayston Hill, is well placed to advise residents how to unlock the potential in their home.
His company advises on the best ways to make a home more energy efficient and comfortable to live in.
Mr Best said: “House buyers are becoming more aware of the energy efficiency of homes and that trend is likely to increase over the coming years.
“If two houses are in a similar area and approximately the same price, this could become the key factor in deciding which one to rent or buy.
“We can help builders and homeowners unlock their extra potential in their building by showing them how to become more energy efficient.”
Recent research conducted by house builder Redrow showed a total of 82 per cent of respondents wanted to live in a house that allowed them to fulfill their ambition of green living.
Lower energy bills were ranked as more important than a garden, parking space, external design and fittings and appliances, with more than a quarter of people willing to pay at least six per cent extra for a home with sustainable features.
And it’s not just the UK where this applies, research conducted in the USA and Australia has produced similar results.
Michael Nettleton, of Shropshire-based Nock Deighton Estate Agents, confirmed that the energy performance of houses was becoming more of a priority for buyers.
He said: “Developers are becoming much more focused on renewables and energy efficiency in their marketing for their sites.
“It hasn’t traditionally been part of the typical buyer’s language and expectations, but it is something that will undoubtedly grow over time.”
